Ancient Lakes

Exploring again, off to the desert

Early morning hike from the upper SE section of the Ancient Lakes

Heading down to the first of several lakes

Rugged trail, happy hiker

Lakes...

and waterfalls...

and more lakes and

waterfalls.

Looking back as we hike out and head to a new trailhead in the lower NW section of the preserve.

Another  trail heading up to where we just were. Still complete solitude.

The strata of basalt layers from the volcanic flows between 17 and 13 million years ago

Smooth stem blazing star

Another large lake. With our sons, we backpacked in and camped here 25 years ago.

Lakeside

lunch spot

This is the falls we saw from the trail we hiked earlier today when we came down from the plateau.

Hiking out we come upon wild buckwheat

Overlooking the Columbia River on our way back

And just for fun, here we are twenty five years ago at Ancient Lakes

Back at the trailhead after our backpack

Drinking warm beer and...

making bitter beer faces. Eric 17, Byron 15 and Kris 13.

Thanks, Jen. We had a great time, especially digging out the old photos.

Kris looks vaguely like Quinn in my eyes.
