Mima Mounds

There is too much snow for a hike in the high country, so we decided to check out the Mima Mounds, a local curiosity
Plenty of informative signage along the way

A viewing platform near the paved part of the trail

A close up of one of the mounds

Another mound in the prairie.  Human burns have maintained this landscape for centuries

Part of the long loop through the mounds

A trailside bench sitting on one of the mounds

Standing atop one of the mounds

Stats for this walk in the park:
About 4 miles total, no elevation gain

Interesting. I've seen pictures of these where the vegetation thrives atop the mounds and less so beside them. Which origin theories do you favor?

Your dad's theory is that the mounds are remnants of ancient tree root systems which prevented the action of water and erosion around them.
