There is too much snow for a hike in the high country, so we decided to check out the Mima Mounds, a local curiosity

Interesting. I've seen pictures of these where the vegetation thrives atop the mounds and less so beside them. Which origin theories do you favor?
Your dad's theory is that the mounds are remnants of ancient tree root systems which prevented the action of water and erosion around them.
